** Safe and Secure City Hall Starts Monday, June 30
------------------------------------------------------------
The City of East Lansing is making changes to enhance safety and security at the building that houses City Hall, 54-B District Court and the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD).
Beginning Monday, June 30, visitors to City Hall, 54-B District Court and the ELPD will be directed to enter through the southwest entrance. This is the set of doors near Linden Street, marked as Door 2. Once inside, they will proceed through a walk-through metal detector. Secondary screenings with a wand may be necessary as well as bag inspections.
“The changes we are making to East Lansing City Hall represent an important tool for protecting both City employees and members of the public,” East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown said. “Whether someone is visiting City Hall to register to vote, pay a bill or obtain a building permit, we want them to know that we take their safety and security very seriously. We are incredibly grateful for the grant funding that made this possible.”
The “Safe and Secure City Hall” project is funded by a Byrne Discretionary Community Project grant to enhance municipal building security, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. Other components of public safety addressed by the $1.5 million grant include modular vehicle barriers and centralized camera surveillance.
“We are grateful to the City of East Lansing for making these updates to ensure the safety of East Lansing’s 54-B District Court for all those who use the justice system,” District Court Chief Judge Molly Hennessey Greenwalt said. “It is a process that was a long time in coming as we have been one of the only courts in the state operating in a building without these measures in place. The new system provides peace of mind to staff and court users.”
Community members who have questions or require accommodations should contact Paul Weidner at (517) 319-6458 or pweidner@cityofeastlansing.com (mailto:pweidner@cityofeastlansing.com) .

** City Wins $50,000 DNR Grant for Downtown Tree Canopies
------------------------------------------------------------
The City of East Lansing has received a $50,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to develop a tree canopy plan to improve and enhance the City’s downtown area.
The Downtown East Lansing Tree Canopy Revitalization Project will develop a cohesive plan for planting, maintaining and managing trees in the downtown area. This plan will address persistent challenges such as fragmented tree management, vandalism and poor planting conditions — long-standing issues that have limited past tree planting success and reduced environmental and social benefits.
This project will involve the community in creating a comprehensive Downtown Tree Canopy Revitalization Plan — a strategic guide that identifies planting sites, recommends ways to improve growing conditions, enhances maintenance efforts and expands fair access to greenspaces. The plan will help ensure that future investments are well-planned, collaborative and reflect the community’s goals for both the look of the downtown canopy and the benefits it should provide.
“We’re thrilled to receive this funding to help create a unified, community-driven vision for downtown East Lansing’s tree canopy,” said Cliff Walls, environmental sustainability and resiliency manager for the City of East Lansing. “This grant will allow us to plan more strategically, plant more effectively and build a downtown tree canopy that truly reflects the values and voices of our community.”
With professional support, the City will host at least three community visioning sessions (two in-person, one virtual) to gather feedback from community members, businesses and stakeholders about their vision for downtown’s tree canopy. Participants will help define priorities such as tree placement, species selection and design elements that improve aesthetics, functionality and environmental benefits. This input will directly shape the resulting plan.
The City of East Lansing was one of 15 communities in Michigan that received grants ranging from $20,000 to $150,000. Grants are made possible through funding provided by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program.
