** Spartan Appreciation Day at the East Lansing Farmers Market This Sunday
------------------------------------------------------------

The East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM), 280 Valley Court, will host a Spartan Appreciation Day on Sunday, Sept. 17 to recognize the City’s special relationship with Michigan State University (MSU) and welcome its students to the community. The ELFM runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Spartan Appreciation Day will include two live music performances. Jazz artist Christopher Minami will perform from 10-11:50 a.m. and the School of Rock House Band will perform from 12:10-2 p.m. Sara Joy Yoga will offer yoga in the park at 11 a.m., courtesy of the MSU Office of Community and Student Relations’ Spartan Ambassadors program. Community members are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and visit with the Spartan Ambassadors while at the market. Additionally, MSU’s beloved mascot, Sparty, will make a special appearance at the market at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Parking for ELFM marketgoers is available for free at the meters in front of the park on Valley Court, at the spaces reserved for Valley Court Community Center on Hillside Court and at two-hour spaces along Oakhill Avenue above the park. ** Downtown East Lansing Installs String Lights in 400 Block Alleyway
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing is pleased to announce a new lighting project that was recently installed in the 400 block alleyway of downtown East Lansing from Charles Street to Division Street, between the businesses that front Grand River Avenue and those on Albert Avenue. The new string lights increase safety for visitors and residents of the downtown area as well as contributing to the beautification of downtown East Lansing.

“We love the new lights that were installed in the alley of the 400 block on Grand River. It has completely transformed the area, and along with the recent planter painting, the alley feels quite festive and vibrant,” said Student Book Store co-owner Greg Ballein.

The majority of the funding for this project came from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) as well as the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU). Special thanks to Chris Richert of the State News and Greg and Brad Ballein of Student Book Store for their support of this project.

** ELPD Issues Reminders About Important Ordinances
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) wants to ensure that all community members, including new and returning students at Michigan State University (MSU) and visitors to campus, are aware of important public safety information this fall. Community members can expect to see ELPD as well as other law enforcement agencies patrolling the downtown area during busy time periods in the City, particularly weekends with home football games at MSU. Officers will be available to engage with people in a variety of ways, including on foot, on bike and in patrol cars. In addition to providing a reassuring presence for community members, officers from ELPD and their partners will be enforcing violations of City ordinances. It is important for community members and visitors to be aware of the following:
* Open alcohol containers and marihuana smoking are NOT allowed in any public spaces throughout the City or in the downtown area.
* Minors under the age of 21 are not allowed to consume or possess alcohol or marihuana.
* Anyone who is in medical distress, or a person accompanying them, can seek medical help without risk of penalty under medical amnesty, including those who are under age 21.
* Noise violations may incur significant additional penalties if they occur at a party with amplified sound, that charges for entry and/or has a common source of alcohol such as a keg.

** MSU Homecoming Parade Next Weekend (Sept. 22); Theme is Coming Home
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are encouraged to suit up in their best Michigan State University (MSU) green-and-white gear to line the streets of East Lansing for the MSU Homecoming parade next Friday, Sept. 22!
