** Summer Solstice Jazz Festival Next Weekend
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing will host the 28th annual Summer Solstice Jazz Festival (SSJF) in downtown East Lansing next weekend! The free event will take place on Friday, June 21 from 6-10 p.m. and on Saturday, June 22 from 3-10 p.m. Both evenings will feature an After Glow performance at the Graduate Hotel's Rock Bar, 133 Evergreen Ave. from 10 p.m.-midnight. The SSJF will also host performances on Sunday, June 23 at the East Lansing Farmers Market. ** Heat Wave Expected to Hit Next Week; Stay Cool, EL
------------------------------------------------------------
The City of East Lansing and surrounding areas are expected to experience a heat wave, starting Sunday, June 16 with temperatures in the low to mid-90s. Humidity levels are also expected to be high, resulting in a heat index of 100 degrees or more. To assist community members, the City of East Lansing will host cooling centers at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Roadfrom 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Populations who are vulnerable to extreme heat include older adults, infants and young children, people who have chronic illnesses and/or take certain medications and those who are unable to keep their living space cool. Additionally, outdoor workers and athletes should exercise caution during extreme heat events.

** No More Nixles! Sign Up for Smart911 Without Delay!

The City of East Lansing and other local municipalities have partnered with Ingham County to provide emergency alerts via Smart911 on the Rave Alerts platform. Community members who wish to start or continue receiving emergency alerts MUST sign up for Smart911 to avoid missing out on important information. ** East Lansing Celebrates Juneteenth!
------------------------------------------------------------

City offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 in celebration of Juneteenth. This includes East Lansing City Hall, 410 Abbot Road; the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road; the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road; and the Department of Public Works (DPW), 1800 E. State Road. Those whose trash and recycling is collected on Wednesdays will be collected on Thursday, June 20 along with regular Thursday customers.

The East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM) will celebrate Juneteenth next weekend (Sunday, June 23) with games in the park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Rock the Block Studio from noon-12:30 p.m. and Library Story Time at 1 p.m. Additionally, the Pollux Quartet will perform from 10:30 a.m.-noon and the Nat Lewis Quartet from 12:30-2 p.m. Sign up for the ELFM weekly newsletter here (https://cityofeastlansing.com/2116/Market-E-Newsletter-Sign-Up) .


** Albert EL Fresco Fun: Special & Regular Events

Albert EL Fresco's first ever 80s Night will be held on Thursday, June 27 from 5-9 p.m. In addition to regularly scheduled family games and live music, the event will feature 80s cover band Miranda and the M80s, contests and free games on pinball and arcade machines thanks to Pinball Pete's!

Two days later, on Saturday, June 29, Downtown East Lansing will host a PRIDE celebration from 5-9 p.m. The event will include 40 local vendors, art activities, giveaways, a drag show from 6:15-7:15 p.m. and lip sync battle at 8:45 p.m.

Regular events at Albert EL Fresco this summer include Thursday Game Nights from 5-9 p.m. with live music from 6-7:30 p.m. Follow Downtown East Lansing on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/DowntownEastLansing) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/downtowneastlansing/) for the latest news.

Free yoga classes are held at Albert EL Fresco on Sundays from 10-11 a.m. and Wednesdays from 9-10 a.m. All ages, genders and abilities are welcome to attend the classes, which are taught by yogis from Yoga State (https://www.yogastate.net/) .

Additional seating has been added to Albert EL Fresco's footprint for 2024 and includes seating on the plaza outside the Marriott Hotel and in the 500 block area.


** City Hopes Survey Will Be "Flooded" with Responses
------------------------------------------------------------

Urban flooding is on the rise in the City of East Lansing and elsewhere around the country. It is expected to worsen due to the increasing frequency and intensity of severe rainfall events. The Wet Weather Resiliency Plan (WWRP) is a multi-year plan to mitigate surface and basement flooding across the City. As part of the plan, the City is conducting an initial data gathering survey to understand properties and neighborhoods that have been impacted by past flood events. All community members are encouraged to fill out the survey, even if they have not been directly subjected to flooding.

** East Lansing Public Library Seeks Community Input
------------------------------------------------------------

The East Lansing Public Library is in the midst of its strategic planning process and wants to hear from the community. Please fill out their survey here (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/elplsurvey24) . Both active library users (including folks who don’t live in East Lansing) AND people who don’t currently use the library but would be eligible to should fill out the survey. Everyone who fills out the survey will earn a small treat and be entered into a grand prize drawing for tickets to the Lansing Lugnuts or a show at the Wharton Center.


** Poverty Property Tax Exemption: Help is Available
------------------------------------------------------------
Property owners who meet income limit and asset level standards set by the City of East Lansing may be eligible for a full or partial exemption of their property taxes. The specific annual income limits vary by size of household and are updated each year. It is necessary to annually apply with the Assessing Department.

Eligible property owners must submit a completed application form and an affirmation of ownership and occupancy form to the Assessing Department. Exemptions may be granted at any Board of Review meeting. The next two meetings are Tuesday, July 16 and Tuesday, Dec. 10.

** Charter Review Committee Deadline Looms
