** Recap of City Council Meeting

The East Lansing City Council met on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with a special meeting at 6 p.m. for closed session, followed by the regular City Council meeting when that adjourned. City Council meetings are held at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road.
A Special Legislative Tribute by State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou was presented to Parks, Recreation and Arts Director Cathy DeShambo who retired from the City in July after 13 years of dedicated service.

* Approval of a contract for the 2025 Hazardous Sidewalk project.
* Ratification of a change order for the ELHCC Pool HVAC Replacement.

* Referral to the City Attorney of Charter Review Committee recommendations.

** Deadline Extended! Financial Health Review Committee Seeks Applicants
------------------------------------------------------------
City Council approved a request to extend the deadline for applicants to the Financial Health Review Committee. East Lansing residents who have financial experience now have until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 to submit an application for City Council's consideration. Preference will be given to City residents who possess accounting, finance, pension or benefit experience.

** Spartan Appreciation Day at the Farmers Market

The East Lansing Farmers Market will host Spartan Appreciation Day at the market on Sunday, Sept. 14. The open-air market runs weekly from June through the end of October in Valley Court Park, just steps away from Downtown East Lansing and the campus of Michigan State University.

* Watch for special visits from Sparty, MSU Men's Basketball and MSU Cheerleading teams!

** Celebrate the Constitution on Wednesday, Sept. 17

Community members are invited to attend a special presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 54-B District Court, 101 Linden St. The event begins at 2 p.m. and will offer attendees an opportunity to learn how general civil cases are processed at the district court level. There will be time for questions and answers with court staff. Cookies will be served after the presentation. This event is free to attend. ** Broad Art Museum's Fall Opening Party TONIGHT

Community members are invited to attend the fall opening party at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum and help welcome its newly-appointed director Phillip Bahar before he officially starts in November. The event is TONIGHT (Friday, Sept. 12) from 6-10 p.m. The Broad is located at 547 E. Circle Drive on the Michigan State University campus along Grand River Avenue. The fall opening party will feature music provided by Impact 89FM, the college radio station, as well as activities such as screen printing, button making, painting, lawn games and more! Beginning at 8 p.m., black-light art supplies will be used to make the evening GLOW. ** City Welcomes New Employees!

The City of East Lansing is pleased to welcome several new employees this month.
Emily Gordon was hired to serve as the City's next City Clerk. Come visit her and the rest of the East Lansing City Clerk staff on Tuesday, Sept. 16 for National Voter Registration Day, approved by the East Lansing City Council at its meeting on Sept. 9. The Survivor Advocacy and Crisis Intervention (SACI) Team with MSU Center for Survivors seeks volunteers to provide essential support, advocacy and crisis services to the MSU campus and Greater Lansing community. SACI volunteers gain knowledge and awareness about sexual and relationship violence and learn valuable crisis intervention skills. Last year, this team of passionate volunteers dedicated over 25,000 hours on-call caring for the community. Anyone can volunteer - students, faculty, staff and community members. Questions? ** East Lansing Homecoming: Heads Up

The parade route for this year's East Lansing High School (ELHS) Homecoming Parade was approved by City Council at the Sept. 9 meeting. The parade will take place next Friday, Sept. 19. Street closures will begin at 5 p.m. The parade route is as follows:
* Old Hickory Lane south to Burcham Drive
* Burcham Drive west to M.A.C. Avenue
* M.A.C. Avenue south to Linden Street
* Linden Street east to Bailey Street
* Bailey Street north to Burcham Drive
* Burcham Drive west to Old Hickory Lane, ending at ELHS
The ELHS boys football team will take on Okemos High School at 7 p.m. Go, Trojans!
Calling All Hannah Middle School / Old High School Alumni
The East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) served as East Lansing High School from 1926-1956 and then Hannah Middle School until 1998. To commemorate the time leading up to the centennial of the building’s construction, the ELHCC would like to showcase special memorabilia from when the building was a school. ** Bicycle Friendly East Lansing to Host Bike Rodeo

September was recognized as Bike Month in the City of East Lansing by City Council at its Tuesday, Sept. 9, meeting. The resolution states that the City celebrates biking and the freedom, the joy and the well-being it imbues within us, as well as the power that more people riding bikes has in making life better for everyone.
Local group Bicycle Friendly East Lansing will host a Bike Rodeo on from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, to teach and encourage safe bike riding. Activities will include bike inspections, helmet fittings, an obstacle course, games and more!
