** Highlights from the Oct. 10 Meeting

The East Lansing City Council met on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) for a discussion-only meeting.

During communications from Council, East Lansing Councilmember Dana Watson reminded community members to get their flu shots and COVID immunizations. She also noted that she is a breast cancer survivor and encouraged community members to keep up with their mammograms.

East Lansing Mayor Pro Tem Jessy Gregg and East Lansing Mayor Ron Bacon expressed sorrow over the shooting death of Ingham County Democratic Party Secretary Ted Lawson, the war in Israel and the death of a toddler in Clinton County. A moment of silence was honored by those in attendance.

Mayor Bacon praised the East Lansing Police Department for its Faith & Blue coat drive and meal delivery over the weekend. He encouraged community members to attend Autumn Fest at the East Lansing Farmers Market on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to find some positivity and suggested that community members check in on each other during these difficult times.

In the City Manager's Report, East Lansing City Manager Robert Belleman noted the deadline for the East Lansing Community Photo Contest is midnight on Oct. 15. Community members are encouraged to share their favorite photos of East Lansing to win prizes and be featured in the City's calendar and an exhibit at the Public Art Gallery at the ELHCC in December.


** 2023 Update to East Lansing's Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report

As a recipient of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding, the City of East Lansing must certify compliance with HUD's Interim Final Rule on Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing and take meaningful steps to address any potential fair housing challenges in East Lansing. Over the past year, the City has updated its Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report, analyzing various potential impediments to affordability, accessibility and fair housing choice throughout the City of East Lansing. ** Discussion of the Michigan Department of Transportation's US 127 Improvements and the Proposed Safety Modifications to Trowbridge Road

Traffic design engineers from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and its contractor, Bergman Engineering, presented on the state's $204 million project along US Highway 127 from Interstate 96 to Interstate 496. The multi-year project will improve safety and increase mobility as part of the overall goal of zero deaths. The specific issue discussed by Council concerns changes at Trowbridge Road, affecting egress from Arbor Drive and Palmer Lane, requiring a new "Michigan left" 800 feet to the west of Arbor Drive.
