** City of East Lansing Office, Building Closures for the Fourth of July and Fireworks Ordinance Reminders
------------------------------------------------------------

With the Fourth of July holiday just around the corner, community members are encouraged to take note of upcoming City of East Lansing office and building closures and are reminded of the City’s fireworks ordinance.

Office & Building Closures
Several City of East Lansing offices will be closed Monday, July 4 in observance of the Fourth of July holiday, including East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Department of Public Works, the East Lansing 54B District Court, the East Lansing Public Library, the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) and East Lansing Prime Time.

In addition to being closed on Monday, July 4, ELHCC will also be closed Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3.

There will be no yard waste or bulk item pickup on Monday, July 4. The next yard waste and bulk item collection day will be the following Monday, which is Monday, July 11.

Fireworks Ordinance
For the upcoming holiday, the use of consumer fireworks is permitted from June 29-July 4 from 11 a.m.-11:45 p.m. each day on personal property in East Lansing. Fireworks are only permitted on July 5 if it falls on the weekend. Igniting consumer fireworks at times not permitted under the City’s ordinance is a civil infraction, with a fine of $1,000 for each violation. Community members should also note that it is illegal to discharge fireworks when intoxicated.

Community members can report the use of fireworks during times not permitted under the ordinance by calling the East Lansing Police Department’s non-emergency phone number at (517) 351-4220, Option 2. If the sound is believed to be gunshots, community members should call 911.

Community members can visit cityofeastlansing.com/fireworks (http://www.cityofeastlansing.com/fireworks) for additional information about the City’s fireworks ordinance and important safety tips from the East Lansing Fire Department.

** New Public Art Installations Dedicated at East Lansing's Burcham Hills
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to check out several new public art installations at Burcham Hills, which were incorporated on the grounds of the community as a part of the recent StoneBriar at Burcham Hills expansion project.

A total of five new pieces of public art, valued at more than $50,000, were dedicated during Burcham Hills’ recent inaugural Art Walk, including two glass sculptures entitled “Meander” and “The Wave” by Craig Mitchell Smith, a high-fired clay sculpture entitled “The Loving Couple” by Mark Chatterley, a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled “The Birdstone” by Rick (Rx) Harrington and a stainless steel sculpture entitled “Eternal Hosta” by Andrew Sandstedt.

Sandstedt’s “Eternal Hosta” sculpture and Smith’s “Meander” sculpture were commissioned by Burcham Hills in fulfillment of the City of East Lansing’s Percent for Art program, and the other three pieces of public art were generously donated by Kay Schmid - one of the newest residents of StoneBriar at Burcham Hills.

During the inaugural Art Walk, Burcham Hills Executive Director Kari Rennie had this to say: “When we embarked on creating StoneBriar at Burcham Hills, we agreed to incorporate artwork in such a way that the greater community and residents alike could experience and enjoy it. For all those involved, this has evolved into one of Burcham Hills’ greatest passion projects yet.”

The Burcham Hills public art installations (and recent Art Walk event) are the result of a great collaboration between Burcham Hills and its committee members (Alanna Harvey, Sarah Schimm, Barb McCleary, Kay Schmid and Peggy Garver) as well as the talented local artists, the East Lansing Arts Commission and StoneBriar architect Todd Gute.

The recently dedicated public art can be found in and adjacent to Burcham Hills’ outdoor courtyard and at the front entrance of StoneBriar at Burcham Hills. Community members interested in checking out this new public art are welcome to park in the back parking lot, where they can easily enter the courtyard area. Burcham Hills is located at 2700 Burcham Drive in East Lansing.

East Lansing’s Percent for Art program (Ordinance No. 1339) requires developers to commit one percent of their project’s cost (with a $25,000 cap) to public art, through the installation of a piece of public art within their project, the donation of a piece of public art to the City of East Lansing or through a payment to the City’s Public Art Fund for future commissions of public art.

** ELFD Capt. Jim Ladiski Deployed to Uvalde Texas to Assist with Crisis Support
------------------------------------------------------------

East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) Capt. Jim Ladiski was recently deployed to Uvalde, Texas to provide crisis support to those impacted by the recent, tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.

Capt. Ladiski was deployed by the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) as a part of a trained crisis response team serving in the Resiliency Center that has been set up to support victims, victims’ families and other community members with connections to the victims. Capt. Ladiski had previously received training and certification in crisis response through NOVA and had been requested by the organization to serve for a week at the Center.

The Resiliency Center was set up to provide a variety of services to those who visited, including counseling services and guidance on victim compensation, legal matters and other support services. Capt. Ladiski was paired with a team of three other individuals from throughout the country (all with different professional backgrounds) who would greet community members each day when they visited, sit down with them to determine their needs and connect them with the various agencies onsite providing support services. A therapy dog was also onsite each day, providing comfort and support to those who visited.

“Uvalde is an extremely resilient and gracious community,” said Capt. Ladiski of his time in Texas. “In such a horrible, tragic time for that community, I was honored to be able to travel there and help in at least a very small way. I also want to thank the City and ELFD leadership for allowing me to go, and my family at home and here at ELFD for stepping in to take over my responsibilities while I was away. I like to think that East Lansing was well represented down there.”
