E-Dialog News for Nov. 29

** City's Print Newsletter Celebrates 50 Years
------------------------------------------------------------
The City's print newsletter, Dialog, debuted in the fall of 1974. It was designed as a quarterly means of communicating with City residents. Mayor Wilbur B. Brookover (father of current East Lansing Mayor George Brookover) noted in a letter on the cover of the first issue that the newsletter was "designed to facilitate the process by which we can work together to maintain a high quality of life in this community." Read the first issue online! (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/DocumentCenter/View/15335/Fall-1974-Dialog-PDF)

Back then, the Dialog was hand-delivered to local homes by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Today, the Dialog is sent via the U.S. Postal Service to more than 14,000 residences.

As seen in the photo above, the Dialog's masthead has changed through the years, but the purpose remains the same. It is a newsletter for East Lansing residents, enhancing transparency and trust in local government.

Dialog, not Dialogue. One of the most frequent questions about the newsletter is why it is called "Dialog" and not spelled "Dialogue." The best guess of staff is that the spelling is a reference to the dialog box on a computer. The first commercially successful personal computer (the Altair 8800) was introduced around the same time, in late 1974. Thus, the Dialog references the greater ease of communicating with the public provided by technology - a fun fact to consider in a digital newsletter.

Putting 1974 in context: Nationally, on Aug. 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon resigned amidst the Watergate scandal. The next day Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States - the first and only one from Michigan. That year, the Post-it note and liposuction were also invented, and the first U.P.C. scanner was installed at a supermarket.

Locally, The Brewery at 3411 Michigan Ave. was featuring performers like Kiss, Iggy & the Stooges, Aerosmith and Rush. This was during the short, six-year timeframe that the drinking age in Michigan was lowered from 21 to 18. Bachman Turner Overdrive, whose song "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" was the number one Billboard hit in early November 1974, performed at the MSU Auditorium that year. MSU Football Coach Denny Stolz led the Spartans to a win over number one Ohio State on Nov. 9, 1974 in an otherwise unremarkable year for the home team.

What now? The City's Communications Department wants to know more about how community members are getting their news AND how they are learning about what's going on in the City. Please take the brief survey! (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PTGJWRG) The survey is designed to be done quickly with only seven questions, but it will provide the department with good information for moving forward and communicating effectively with residents.
