** East Lansing City Council Special Meeting Recap
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing City Council held a special meeting on Wednesday, July 19. City Council heard a presentation by Joyce Parker from the Michigan Municipal League on the City Manager search process. Five candidates were chosen for the next round, including two alternates. J.R. Beauboeuf was appointed by Councl to the Board of Water and Light's Board of Commissioners. Council also passed a resolution to amend the City's Charter increase City Council from five members to seven. Voters will have the opportunity to vote on that issue in the election on Tuesday, Nov. 7. View the agenda and watch a recording of the Council meeting here. ** Community Members Invited to ELPD Open House Tomorrow (Saturday, July 22)
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to attend an Open House hosted by the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) on Saturday, July 22 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the East Lansing police station, 409 Park Lane.

Attendees at this year’s open house event will be able to go on a tour of the police station, meet a K-9 officer and sit inside a patrol car. The ELPD will also be performing car seat inspections and offering children’s fingerprinting services. There will be crime scene investigation (CSI) demonstrations, food, giveaways and much more. Additionally, the ELPD will be collecting new books for infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children.


** PRIDE Celebration in Downtown East Lansing Rescheduled for Tomorrow Night (Saturday, July 22)
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing, in collaboration with the Spartan Housing Cooperative, will host a PRIDE event celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community on Saturday, July 22 from 5-9 p.m. in downtown East Lansing. The event will be held in Albert EL Fresco, located between Abbot Road and M.A.C. Avenue, and at Ann Street Plaza, on the northwest corner of Albert and M.A.C. avenues. The event will feature live music by Michigan pop artist J. Santino from 6-7 p.m. and a drag show featuring performers Crystal d’Light, Oliver Woodstock and Raggedie Jane from 7-9 p.m. Local vendors will be on site with PRIDE-related giveaways and community art activities.


** CDBG Construction Project Begins Monday, July 24, Includes Traffic Shifts

Community members are advised that the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) construction project will begin on Monday, July 24.

The project will include the removal and replacement of existing sidewalk and ramp locations at the intersections of Albert and Spartan avenues, Albert Avenue and Kenberry Drive, Albert and Lexington avenues and Frye and Spartan avenues. The construction will result in traffic shifts beginning on Monday, July 24. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes of travel when possible.


** Second Session with African Leaders from Mandela Washington Fellowship to be Held Monday, July 24
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing’s Prime Time Seniors Program has partnered with Michigan State University’s Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities Program to host a cohort of Africa’s emerging leaders from the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative.

Community members are invited to attend the African Perspectives on Civil Engagement series at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center. “Climate Change, Sustainability and Environmental Justice in Africa” will be held on Monday, July 24 from 1:30-3 p.m. To reserve a seat, call (517) 337-1113.


** All-of-us Express Children's Theatre Announces Disney’s “Frozen Jr.” to Open Next Weekend
------------------------------------------------------------

All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre (AECT) invites community members to attend its summer performance of Disney’s “Frozen Jr.” beginning next weekend. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 28 and Friday, Aug. 4, as well as at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30 and Aug. 5 and 6. The performances will be held in the Albert A. White Performing Arts Theater at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road.

Tickets are $8 for youth (17 and under) and $12 for adults (18 and older). Tickets can also be purchased in person at ELHCC, 819 Abbot Road.

East Lansing High School (ELHS) is on a mission to preserve the school's rich history! They are looking for donations of the Ceniad that have gone missing from the archives for the following years: 1920, 1922, 1924, 1928, 1929, 1950, 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1964, 1975, 1977 and 1990. There is still lots of summer left! The summer event lineup (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1919) has only just begun and features two more Play in the Park dates, three moonlight films and five summer concerts, including Twelve Above starting at 6 p.m. tonight at Ann Street Plaza.

** Community Members Invited to Attend National Night Out, Touch-a-Truck Event on Tuesday, Aug. 1
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to attend the annual National Night Out, Touch-a-Truck event on Tuesday, Aug. 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), 950 Abbot Road.

The ELPL and East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) are co-hosts of this family-friendly event, held each year on the first Tuesday in August. National Night Out was created in 1984 to foster a sense of shared community between neighbors and law enforcement, thereby creating safer places to live.

In East Lansing, this popular, annual event offers free fun for all ages. This year’s event will feature a variety of vehicles for children to explore as well as a chance to meet local police officers, firefighters and police K9s. Attendees will have a chance to get more information about Neighborhood Watch programs in the City and register bicycles with ELPD. The event will also include bubbles, sidewalk chalk, snacks and more!

Vehicles for the Touch-a-Truck portion of the event will include police vehicles from ELPD and the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety; a fire engine and ambulance from the East Lansing Fire Department; several different trucks from the East Lansing Department of Public Works; ELPL’s Library on the Go mobile pop-up library; a school bus from Dean Transportation; a College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving® vehicle; a tow truck from H&H Mobil; and more!

Please note that ELPL, including its parking lot, will close at 5 p.m. to prepare for this year’s event. Parking will be available on side streets as well as at All Saints Episcopal Church, 800 Abbot Road and the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.
