** East Lansing Celebrates Its Election Heroes Serving on the Frontlines of Democracy
------------------------------------------------------------
There are not words powerful enough to express the debt of gratitude this community has to its incredibly hardworking election workers, beginning with the City Clerk's staff who have administered five elections in the past twelve months, including multiple days of early voting for three of those elections. Thank you, too, to the legions of election inspectors who signed on for long, busy days and yet endeavored to make all voters feel welcome at the polls. Thank you as well to all of the City employees who put aside their regular work on Election Day to take on election duties.

East Lansing was one of only three jurisdictions in the state to have an Election Day Vote Center to provide same-day voter registration for those who needed to register to vote and cast a ballot. The City was selected for this role because of the thousands of first-time voters at Michigan State University. The City partnered with MSUvote and WKAR to enhance the long relationship that has existed between "town and gown" offering early voting and an Election Day Vote Center on campus at WKAR's Studio B. Early voting and a process that was rigorously planned out over several months in advance of Election Day contributed to ensure that none of the City's 17 precincts experienced excessively long wait times. Thank you, again, to all who worked tirelessly late into the night to ensure the sacred right of a fair and free election for all.

** East Lansing Fire Department Raises Funds for Important Cause and Tests Stamina at Air Climb
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) participated in the American Lung Association's Fight for Air Climb for the fifth year on Sunday, May 19, 2024. ELFD was recognized by the organization for raising $6,180 in support of the cause, the second-highest of all the teams!

The "fight" consists of firefighter-participants climbing the stairs around Comerica park -- about 2,300 steps in total, or the equivalent of 1.15 miles -- all while wearing 70 pounds of turnout gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

ELFD Deputy Chief (DC) Mark Koonter said that he believed there were about 60 fire departments from around the state who competed in the firefighter division, as well as thousands of individuals who do the climb without wearing any gear.

The ELFD team included Fire Marshall John Newman, Danielle Fenton, Firefighter Brown, Lt. Nicole Floyd, Firefighter Morrall, Firefighter Kueppers, DC Koonter, Lt. Luce, Capt. Jim Ladiski, Firefighter LaFargue, Firefighter Hogan, Jeremy Hagerman and Robbie Gleason.

DC Koonter was recognized for finishing second in his age group, Lt. Floyd finished first in her age group and Fenton finished second in her age group. The top three times from each team were added for a team score. Gleason, DC Koonter and LaFargue had a combined time of 1 hour and 2 minutes to take sixth place overall.
