** ELFD Hosts Training Facility Open House
------------------------------------------------------------

The East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) hosted an open house to allow community members to see ELFD's new training facility.

The training facility project began in 2022. Then-Fire Chief Dawn Carson created a committee of ELFD personnel to research options and submit a proposal. In June 2023, the committee submitted a proposal to build a training structure for approximately $210,000. In January 2024, East Lansing City Council approved $200,000 of federal ARPA funds to be used for the project, and pre-construction planning began.

Throughout the planning process, construction costs continued to rise, and additional ideas of training needs developed. Through the help of many contractors and organizations, the substantial increase in costs of material, labor and added training elements were covered by generous donations. Approximately $350,000 in donated labor and materials allowed this project to be completed.

ELFD now has a multidimensional structure that will allow them to train for multiple contingencies. In and around the structure, firefighters can train in basic firefighting skills such as advancing a hoseline into a smoke-filled atmosphere, deploying ground ladders and aerial apparatus, performing search and rescue, connecting to a standpipe to simulate high-rise fire attack, performing forcible entry and more.

Firefighters can also train in many technical rescue disciplines such as high-angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, structural collapse rescue and simulated hazardous materials mitigation.

** Read for Your Rights TONIGHT
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing, in partnership with (SCENE) Metrospace and the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), will host “Read for Your Rights EL,” a dynamic and creative event centered around banned books and the power of expression.

Highlights will include live read-outs of banned book by local celebrities, hands-on activities such as artist trading cards and a button-making station, and banned book giveaways for attendees. There will also be a projection mapping project on the Division Street Garage created by students in Alison Dobbins’ compositing and special effects for stage and screen class, transforming the exterior space of the Division Street Garage with visuals that reflect passages and images of banned books.

The event will be held in conjunction with the opening reception for an art exhibit entitled Local Sources, featuring prints and publications from Michigan creators whose works demonstrate the resilience that can be found in non-traditional publishing.
