** The Most Heartwarming Story of This Cold Week ------------------------------------------------------------ While collecting live-cut Christmas trees for recycling this week, Department of Public Works (DPW) employee Derrick Dale rescued this ornament that had accidentally been left on a tree, saving it just before the tree was fed through the wood chipper to turn it into mulch. Dale recognized that it was something special and contacted the City's Communications Department to blast it out on social media. And the community delivered in a big way, tagging and sharing the post, and the owner was found within the day.
QUICK REMINDER THAT TODAY IS THE LAST DAY to put a live-cut Christmas tree at the curb or drop it off in the designated areas at the following City parks: Patriarche Park, Emerson Park, Henry Fine Park, Valley Court Park and White Memorial Park. Trees can be left curbside for no-fee collection without advance request. Please remove all bags, holiday decorations and tree stands, and cut trees taller than 6 feet in half. Trees will be chipped and used as mulch in City parks or donated to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for use as rabbit habitats.
Today before 4:30 p.m. is also the last chance to recycle both functioning and non-functioning Christmas tree lights at DPW in the cart inside the lobby.
