** Battle of the Businesses: Who Will Win?
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to participate in the City’s second-ever Battle of the Businesses Bracket Contest! A kickoff event will be held tonight (Friday, March 15) from 5-8 p.m. at Ann Street Plaza at the intersection of MAC and Albert avenues. Community members will have an opportunity to receive free $15 Daytime Nighttime Anytime (DNA) eGift cards while supplies last.

The Businesses Bracket Contest, which is hosted by the City’s Downtown Management Board (DMB), features downtown businesses in a lineup similar to the NCAA March Madness tournament. Rounds coincide with the NCAA’s tournament dates.

Participants must fill out their predictions online (https://widgets.commoninja.com/32084939-d87a-41ce-88c7-7360569fbc86) . Community members will then vote for their favorite downtown East Lansing businesses via polls on the @DowntownEastLansing account on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/DowntownEastLansing) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/downtowneastlansing/) . The business winner from each poll will then advance to the next round.

Each bracket will be scored according to a point system. A correct round 1 matchup will be worth one point, round 2 will be worth two points and so on, with a correct finals matchup worth six points. Bracket submissions must be received by Monday, March 18 at 11:59 p.m. to be included and eligible for prizes. Winners will receive DNA eGift cards. The individual who most accurately predicts the outcome will win a $300 DNA card, second place will earn a $200 DNA card and third place will win a $100 DNA card. Learn more about the DNA eGift card program here (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/2134/Downtown-eGift-Card-Program) .

** Charles Street Parking Garage Elevator Under Construction for Modernization Project
------------------------------------------------------------

An elevator modernization project in the Charles Street Parking Garage, 121 Charles St., started this week on the elevator at the southeast end of the parking garage near the alley. Once that one is complete, work will begin on the northwest elevator. The elevators will be worked on one at a time to minimize disruption to community members and ensure access to upper levels of the garage during the project. The stairwells will remain open during the project. Signs and barricades will be erected for public safety.

** New Downtown Rotating Art Display Features “DOOMSCROLLING”
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to visit downtown East Lansing to view the latest rotating art display, featuring an exhibit by Kayla Mattes entitled “DOOMSCROLLING,” presented in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University.

Curated by Rachel Winter, assistant curator at the MSU Broad Art Museum, DOOMSCROLLING aims to unravel society’s addiction to digital culture through the analog process of making hand-crafted weavings. These works of art humorously explore the ephemeral concepts that keep users stuck to the web, such as memes, gifs, TikTok posts, apps and the quest for information to people’s most burning, often personal questions.

“Much like the City of East Lansing works to bring vibrancy to our local community, Kayla Mattes’s work brings joy and humor to everyday life,” Winter said. “I’m excited to share Kayla’s work in this capacity. This continued collaboration with the City of East Lansing helps us to see the world in new ways and find art in unexpected places.”

The rotating art display was established by the City’s Downtown Development Authority in 2021 as an open-air public space. It includes four double-sided exhibit panels, each measuring 4’x6’, along the 400 block of Albert Avenue on the northside of the Division Street Parking Garage.
