** Community Welcomes Back Michigan State University Students
------------------------------------------------------------
Michigan State University (MSU) students began returning to campus earlier this week in anticipation of the 2023-24 school year. There are 16,997 students who live on campus in the residence halls and university apartments. View the schedule of welcome events being hosted by MSU here. (https://spartanexperiences.msu.edu/fall-welcome/events-fall-welcome/index.html) The first home football game will be played against Central Michigan University next Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. For information about game day parking, text SPARTANFB23 to 888777.

Please note that MSU's Homecoming is several weeks earlier than normal this year. The MSU Homecoming Parade will be held on Friday, Sept. 22 with more details to come! The East Lansing High School Homecoming Parade and football game against Lansing Everett High School will be held the following weekend, on Friday, Sept. 29.


** Moonlight ExtravaGRANDza: A Night to Eat, Shop and Explore Downtown East Lansing
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to join downtown East Lansing businesses in welcoming back Michigan State University students at the City’s Moonlight ExtravaGRANDza event this Saturday, Aug. 26 from 6-11 p.m. There will be:
* Live music performances at Valley Court Park, 280 Valley Court and Ann Street Plaza, on the west corner of Albert and M.A.C. avenues
* Games such as inflatable jousting at Albert EL Fresco (Albert Avenue between Abbot Road and M.A.C. Avenue) and knockerball at Valley Court Park
* Meet and greets with Zeke the Wonderdog and Sparty at Fountain Square on the east corner of Albert and M.A.C. avenues
* Giveaways of succulent plants at the East Lansing Marriott Plaza, 300 M.A.C. Ave.
* A hot dog eating contest hosted by University Weiner, 551 E. Grand River Ave. (located in the 500 Block alleyway)

** ELPD Issues Reminders About Important Ordinances
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) wants to ensure that all community members, including new and returning students at Michigan State University (MSU) and visitors to campus, are aware of important public safety information this fall. Community members can expect to see ELPD as well as other law enforcement agencies patrolling the downtown area during busy time periods in the City, particularly weekends with home football games at MSU. Officers will be available to engage with people in a variety of ways, including on foot, on bike and in patrol cars. In addition to providing a reassuring presence for community members, officers from ELPD and their partners will be enforcing violations of City ordinances. It is important for community members and visitors to be aware of the following:
* Open alcohol containers and marihuana smoking are NOT allowed in any public spaces throughout the City or in the downtown area.
* Minors under the age of 21 are not allowed to consume or possess alcohol or marihuana.
* Anyone who is in medical distress, or a person accompanying them, can seek medical help without risk of penalty under medical amnesty, including those who are under age 21.
* Noise violations may incur significant additional penalties if they occur at a party with amplified sound, that charges for entry and/or has a common source of alcohol such as a keg.

** Albert EL Fresco to Close for Season on August 28, Street Will Reopen to Traffic
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are encouraged to enjoy Albert EL Fresco for the last time this weekend. The pedestrian-friendly area located along Albert Avenue between Abbot Road and M.A.C. Avenue in downtown East Lansing will close for the season on Monday, Aug. 28 and the street will then reopen to traffic. Tonight (Friday, Aug. 25) Risky Studios will perform at nearby Ann Street Plaza to close out the Summer Concert Series. (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/SummerConcertSeries) Tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 26) the City will host “Moonlight ExtravaGRANDza: A Night to Eat, Shop and Explore Downtown East Lansing” with more live music and games such as inflatable jousting at Albert EL Fresco.
The East Lansing City Clerk's Office announces that applications for absentee ballots will be arriving in mailboxes during the first week of September. ** Community Members Invited to Share Photos of East Lansing for Contest

Community members are invited to share their favorite images of the City of East Lansing to win prizes in the 2023 Community Photo Contest.

The East Lansing Downtown Management Board is the official sponsor of the contest, providing the prizes to the winners:
* 1st Place: $150 Downtown East Lansing eGift Card
* 2nd Place: $100 Downtown East Lansing eGift Card
* 3rd Place: $50 Downtown East Lansing eGift Card
* 10 Honorable Mentions: $10 Downtown East Lansing eGift Cards

** East Lansing Family Aquatic Center Open on Weekends Only from Now Until Labor Day

The East Lansing Aquatic Center will be open the next two weekends. Hours of operation are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays ONLY now that local schools have resumed classes.
