** Exploring Unconscious Bias with Vernā Myers
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing is excited to host a special event entitled, “Exploring Unconscious Bias with Vernā Myers” from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Myers defines unconscious bias as “the stories we make up about people before we know who they are.” Her TED talk “How to Overcome Our Biases? Walk Boldly Toward Them (https://www.ted.com/talks/verna_myers_how_to_overcome_our_biases_walk_boldly_toward_them?language=en) ” has earned over 5 million views.

** Smart911 Sign Up Today; Don't Delay!
------------------------------------------------------------

The City of East Lansing and other local municipalities are partnering with Ingham County to provide emergency alerts via Smart911 from Rave Alerts. The City has been using Nixle to communicate emergency events, including road closures, severe weather and other critical situations for more than a decade. Notifications will no longer be sent via Nixle after Saturday, June 1. Community members who wish to begin or continue receiving emergency alerts MUST sign up for Smart911 to avoid missing out on important information. ** East Lansing Farmers Market Season Opens Sunday
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to attend the ceremonial “market bell” ringing to officially open the 2024 East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM) season with East Lansing Mayor George Brookover Sunday, June 2 at 10 a.m. The first 125 customers will receive a reusable market tote.

ELFM market manager Karla Forrest-Hewitt, in partnership with the Michigan State University Museum, will lead community members on a walk-and-talk tour through the marketplace, learning what goes into supporting and maintaining hyperlocal food systems from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Get in touch with the “Slow Food” movement, meet the passionate people who bring food from the fields to plates and leave with a deeper connection to the world of fresh, locally-sourced goodness! ** East Lansing Family Aquatic Center Reopens Saturday, June 1
------------------------------------------------------------

The East Lansing Family Aquatic Center (ELFAC), 6400 Abbot Road, will officially open for the 2024 summer season on Saturday, June 1! Regular hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Daily rates for the ELFAC are $11; $10 for seniors who are 60 years or older with identification; and free for children who are 2 years old or younger. ** Public Art Gallery Exhibit Opening Reception
------------------------------------------------------------

The Public Art Gallery on the second floor of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road will feature Lansing spray-paint artist Sarah Carter with an exhibit entitled, "Before & After" in June. Carter says, "My artwork taps into the awe of how big the world is, and how small we are in front of a giant moon and sun." Community members are invited to attend an opening reception from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. The exhibit will run through Friday, June 28. ** Yoga at Albert EL Fresco
------------------------------------------------------------

All ages, genders and abilities are welcome to free yoga classes hosted at Albert EL Fresco in downtown East Lansing this summer. Taught by Yoga State, the classes take place on Wednesday mornings from 9-10 a.m. and Sundays from 10-11 a.m. Bring a mat or towel, and leave with good vibes! ** Summer Reading Program Kicks Off Monday at ELPL

Community members of all ages are invited to participate in the summer reading program at the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), 950 Abbot Road. The program begins on Monday, June 3 and ends Saturday, Aug. 17. It is free of charge and open to the public.

The official kickoff event for the program is an all-ages party that will take place at ELPL on June 3 from 5-7 p.m. The party will feature performances by Cirque Amongus, giveaways from WKAR/PBS Kids and a maker craft for families while supplies last. There is no cost.

Congratulations to the East Lansing High School (ELHS) class of 2024! Wishing all of the students of East Lansing Public Schools a happy and safe summer vacation. ** Non-Motorized Transportation Plan Open House

Community members are invited to learn more about the City's Non-Motorized Transportation Plan at an open house on Wednesday, June 5 from 4-6 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Non-motorized transportation encompasses bikes and walking, in-line skating, roller skating and wheel chair use. ** Sharing Information About Construction Updates

** Save the Date for the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival
------------------------------------------------------------

Community members are invited to celebrate the summer solstice at the free Summer Solstice Jazz Festival (SSJF) from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, June 21 and 3-10 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. The headliners for this year’s event are SuperBlue: Kurt Elling & Charlie Hunter, along with Endea Owens & The Cookout.

Both evenings will feature an After Glow performance and jam session at the Graduate Rock Bar, 133 Evergreen Ave. from 10 p.m.-midnight featuring Emma Wilburn on Friday and Tommy Noble on Saturday.

The SSJF is partnering with the East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM) to present more live jazz performances on Sunday, June 23. Performances at the ELFM include the Pollux Quartet, led by Sarah Whitaker from 10:30 a.m.-noon and the Nat Lewis Quartet from 12:30-2 p.m.

The East Lansing City Council has voted to establish a new Charter Review Committee to examine the City Charter and make recommendations regarding any changes it may feel are necessary or appropriate. Applications to serve on the committee will be accepted until Saturday, June 15, at which point Council will appoint members of the Committee.
