Thank you to this year's Crystal Awards Selection Committee: Thasin Sardar, Polly Synk, David Chapin, Nella Davis-Ray and Libby Keenan.
THE 2025 CRYSTAL AWARD WINNERS Douglas J Aveda Institute is known for its hands-on approach and holistic philosophy, preparing students for successful careers in hair care, skin or massage, while emphasizing environmental responsibility and industry excellence. They frequently partner with local organizations to support the community, providing a variety of free services at these events, including haircuts, make-up applications and chair massages. Last year, Douglas J East Lansing raised more than $2,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and provided massages to both attendees and volunteers at the JDRF walk. They also raised over $1,000 for Oliver’s Stones, a charity that helps grieving families obtain a grave marker for a son or daughter aged 15-39 at the time of their passing.
Ida Yvonne Pernell is a pioneer in education who has impacted the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of East Lansing children and families. While she and her husband Eugene were undergraduate students at Alabama State University, they were active participants in the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Mrs. Pernell was only the fourth Black teacher hired in the East Lansing Public Schools. As part of her second-grade curriculum, she celebrated Black history and helped children learn about parts of history omitted from the textbooks. Mrs. Pernell helped children develop self-confidence and she supported them in fulfilling their full potential. During her 10 years of service on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan, Mrs. Pernell would visit area schools to teach children about the contributions of African Americans to art, civil rights, education, science, inventions, sports and entertainment. Former students and families continue to keep in touch, sharing appreciation for the kindness and love of learning she instilled in them. Mrs. Pernell’s belief in their potential let them know they could be anything they wanted to be. Her family celebrates her, honors her and look to her for wisdom, guidance, love and support.
Pamela Smiadak: A community organizer and former educator, Mrs. Smiadak's Little Free Library illustrates her love of community and passionate commitment to promoting literacy. Mrs. Smiadak has provided leadership and mentoring to many children and adults. She organized literacy events for students and families at Donley Elementary School, provided tutoring and was always passing along a good book to a colleague. Her passion for literature and reading have served as a model for students, families and friends. Since her retirement, she is constantly updating her Little Free Library, keeping it packed with books, snacks and school supplies. She frequently organizes books around fun themes like Shark Week or the Olympics and around holidays and cultural celebrations like Black History Month, Ramadan, Christmas, Hanukkah and Diwali.
