Retiring East Lansing City Clerk Marie Wicks was honored at the Feb. 18 East Lansing City Council meeting with a special legislative tribute by State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou, who cited Wicks' invaluable service as a "clerk who really cared about the voters and really wanted to ensure that every vote was counted." In her remarks after being presented with the special tribute, Wicks spoke with pride about the City Clerk team and her mentee, Chief Deputy Clerk Amy Gordon (pictured above). Gordon is currently serving as the City's interim clerk. Wicks also thanked everyone who works on elections in the community. ** Five-Year Financial Forecast: 2026-2030

East Lansing Chief Financial Officer Audrey Kincade -- who was appointed to her new position earlier that day (https://cityofeastlansing.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2270) -- provided a special presentation to City Council on the five-year financial forecast for the City's general fund. The report highlighted risks, uncertainties and vulnerabilities, going into further detail on major categories.

** Honoring the Holy Month of Ramadan
------------------------------------------------------------
Council approved a resolution recognizing the commencement of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting and spiritual renewal, at the meeting on Feb. 18, noting that there are several thousand Muslims in the Greater Lansing area including Muslim students from all over the world who attend Michigan State University. The resolution also noted the annual Mayors' Ramadan Unity Dinner, which is held to promote and celebrate diversity in the region. This year's event will be held on Monday, April 21 at the Henry Center for Executive Development and the theme is "More Than a Meal." ** Street Closures Approved for Race
------------------------------------------------------------
Council approved a street closure request for southbound West Road from the MSUFCU northernmost parking lot entrance that connects West Road to GreenStone Farm Credit Services from 10 a.m.-noon on Sunday, April 13 for the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan's Run for the House 5K and 10K. An officer from the East Lansing Police Department will be stationed at the intersection of West and Coleman roads during the race. The Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan provides a home-away-from-home for families who have a child being hospitalized or receiving treatment at Lansing-area hospitals and clinics. Other items on the agenda at the Feb. 18 City Council meeting included:
* Council approved the appointments of Jessica Sender to the Zoning Board of Appeals (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/630/Zoning-Board-of-Appeals) for a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2025 and Christopher McNamara to the East Lansing Independent Police Oversight Commission (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/2227/Independent-Police-Oversight-Commission) for a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2027.
* Council approved a substantial amendment in the amount of $3,695 to East Lansing's FY2025 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) budget.
* Council approved a conditional Class III rental license for occupancy of up to two unrelated persons or a family for each unit at 840-842 Beechlawn. The owner applicant is Muhammad T. Jat, Okemos, and the local legal agent is Mohamad H. Abduljaber, Lansing.

** Children's Cultural Concert Series Has Begun
------------------------------------------------------------
The first event in this year's Children's Cultural Concert series began last Saturday with Sharp Feather and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi.

The next concert will be Saturday, March 1 and feature Yamini Kalluri, an internationally acclaimed South Indian Kuchipudi dancer.

** Exhibit Opens Monday at (SCENE) Metrospace

"RESISTANCE: Ukrainian Art of Freedom" will open at (SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles St. on Monday, Feb. 24 with a reception from 5-7 p.m.

The exhibit features the work of seven Ukrainian artists exploring the theme of identity transformations and decolonizing practices in Ukrainian art as seen through the lens of cultural resistance. The exhibit ends Friday, March 21.

** Meet Silas the Comfort K9 Saturday!

The East Lansing Public Library and East Lansing Police Department are partnering to host a “Paint with the Police” event at the library, 950 Abbot Road.

The free family-friendly event will take place from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 22.

Children will be able to enjoy story time and snacks, paint a wooden toy car courtesy of the R.J. Scheffel Memorial Toy Project (https://www.scheffel-toys.org/) and meet ELPD Comfort K-9 Silas, a 7-month-old golden doodle.


** Community Survey for Next Police Chief
------------------------------------------------------------

“As we embark on the important journey of selecting our next police chief, we are reaching out to our community members to hear your views, desires and perspectives,” said East Lansing City Manager Robert Belleman. “Your input in this process is important to helping us find a leader who will best serve and protect our community.”

The survey, which can be completed in 3-5 minutes, can be found online at https://forms.office.com/r/G7GYnYeE4r. Survey takers should complete the survey by Monday, March 3. All responses will be kept confidential and anonymous.
