On Oct. 23, 1999, the City dedicated the completion of the first section of the Northern Tier Trail. Back then, it was referred to as the Northern Tier Bike/Hike Trail. Phase one was just two miles long, extending east from Cricket Lane to White Memorial Park and north from Colorado Drive to Abbot Park, which was rededicated as Azaadiikaa Park in 2022. The new name for the City's largest park honors the City's Indigenous heritage and means "Many Cottonwoods."
Community members hiked and bicycled out to celebrate the dedication of the trail 25 years ago despite blustery weather because of its potential for safely bridging neighborhoods and connecting opposite sides of the City to each other. Funding for the construction of the Northern Tier Trail was made possible by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Ingham County Trails and Parks Millage.
** "In a world of constant change and flux, where being in the moment seems increasingly harder to attain, there is also something about the notion of traveling along a pathway -- under our own power -- that reconnects us, and indeed binds together all humanity..."
------------------------------------------------------------
Robert Searns, author of "Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes"
Today, the Northern Tier Trail is nearly triple the size of phase one, consisting of 5.8 miles of pathways. The trail connects community parks and recreation facilities to neighborhoods, fulfilling the dream of those who worked for its integration in the last century. The Northern Tier Trail provides a year-round safe space for non-motorized fitness activity like biking, hiking and running.
The Northern Tier Trail also provides an environmental benefit to the City, serving as a protective buffer for the Sanderson and Remy Chandler drains and creating a natural showcase for a variety of wildlife, plants, flowers and trees.
Visit the Northern Tier Trail in person. Parking access is available from nine separate locations at various parks and facilities throughout the City's Northern Tier. Download a map here. (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/DocumentCenter/View/12529/Northern-Tier-Trail-Map-PDF)
** Historic District Commission Recognizes Century of Landmark Structure
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing Historic District Commission would like to recognize the 100-year anniversary of The Peoples Church building, which is designated as an East Lansing Landmark Structure in the City's Historic District code. The Peoples Church, located at 200 W. Grand River Ave., was designed by architect W.E.N. Hunter of Detroit and built in 1924 by the H.G. Christman Company of Chicago and Lansing. The building is in the Collegiate Gothic Style and was designed to harmonize with the Michigan Agricultural College buildings of that time period.
